Arizona dropped from 7th in the nation in 2016 to 15th in 2017, joining 20 other states that experienced declines. The new Gallup study showed that the largest year-over-year decline in the 10-year history of the Well-Being Index took place in 2017.

WHY IT MATTERS

The Well-Being Index captures how people feel about and experience their daily lives. The Gallup study includes more than 2.5 million surveys that examine well-being across five elements:
Sense of Purpose: Liking what you do and being motivated to achieve your goals
Social Relationships: Having supportive relationships and love in your life
Financial Security: Managing your economic life to reduce stress and increase security
Relationship to Community: Liking where you live, feeling safe and having pride in your community
Physical Health: Have good health and enough energy to get things done daily

These elements affect everything from individual job performance, physical and mental health to a region’s overall productivity and prosperity.

THE ARIZONA WE HAVE

2017 was a challenging year for American well-being. The national score in 2017 was 61.5, a decline from 62.1 in 2016. The drop was especially evident in the West and South.

  • Seven Western states suffered declines: Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawaii, Nevada, Oregon and Washington.
  • Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho and Utah are still among the Top 10 states in the nation.
  • Not a single state showed statistically significant improvement compared to the previous year.

The Gallup Well-Being Index captures how people feel about and experience their lives. The annual study examines well-being across five elements: the sense of purpose Arizonans feel, the strength of our social relationships, our financial security, the sense of connection we have to the community where we live and our physical health.

In 2017, 21 states experienced a decline in their overall well-being score and not a single state showed statistically significant improvement compared to 2016. Arizona was among seven Western states that showed a decline.

While Arizona’s overall score in 2017 declined by only 1.2 points, the lack of financial security expressed by Arizonans and the need to strengthen the sense of connection that people feel to the communities in which they live continue to challenge Arizona and affect its well-being.

My Perspective

When CFA set out to build a citizens' agenda for Arizona, we didn't know it would end up placing Arizona at the center of a national struggle to address the challenges confronting democracy today–the growing lack of confidence that citizens have in government and their growing lack of participation in the civic life of our communities and nation.

In many ways, Arizona is a microcosm of these challenges. This fact was made clear in the results of the Gallup Arizona Poll (2009), which identified the deep concerns that Arizonans have about the need for both effective leaders and engaged citizens. CFA is now in the process of building Arizona Progress Meters for each of the 8 citizen goals defined by the people who live here. The culmination of these goals is The Arizona We Want.

The Arizona We Want is a long-term vision and it can be achieved if we work together.
